BJJ not only teaches self-defense, but life lessons too
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art based on the concept that technique can overcome size and strength. In BJJ, you don’t win because of any natural advantage, you win because you put in the time to learn and practice. It can teach adults and children the values of persistence, mindfulness, and resilience.
There isn’t one definite list of principles across all of BJJ. In Gracie Jiu Jitsu, a school named after the five brothers who first adapted the sport from judo, there are 32 micro-principles. But jiu jitsu teaches principles which are not only fighting technique, but life lessons. For newcomers to the sport, here are a few:
Good technique can overcome any opponent
While your opponent may be taller, heavier, and more muscular, it doesn’t mean they have the upper hand. In BJJ, you learn to use your own strengths against your opponent’s weaknesses. It’s based on grappling and submission holds, so it’s never a contest of violence but of technical combat.
Persistence leads to success
Unlike some other martial arts, the bulk of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighting happens on the ground. This means that persistence over the course of a longer fight can lead you to the win. So not only does BJJ encourage long-term practice, but also short-term determination within each fight.
Adapt to the present moment
A good plan is useless when circumstances change. BJJ teaches you to make good, fast decisions based on the present moment. The best fighters can move like water, simultaneously avoiding, reacting, and planning their next move.
